The owners of this 1890s island cottage near Boothbay Harbor, Maine wanted light and space in what had originally been a "maid's kitchen." An assortment of small, dark spaces were brought together, and bands of sympathetically proportioned windows were added, using minimal structure between windows in order to evoke the island's vernacular cottage style.
Although the resulting kitchen is much larger than the original, cozy sub-spaces are defined within the larger room, and original finishes are matched in order to make the room feel at home with the rest of the house.
